What’s going to suit the occasion?

Menswear is never easy; fashion changes at a quicker rate than we can keep track of, style is usually in the eye of the beholder and we are always dictated by society and occasion in regards to what we wear. Whatever the event or venue, you’re always going to need to look your best, so which are the all-important rules to follow?
For every situation in a man’s life, there’s always an outfit to match. Noose & Monkey, a key player in men’s fashion, have compiled the definitive list of the staple items for those important situations in a man’s lift.

Going for a job interview

If you’re going for a job interview, then you usually need to appear confident and in control of the situation, while making sure that your personality is being demonstrated through what you wear. In order to nail the look on the day, you should complete some background research to see how you can tailor your outfit to the particular business you’re applying to.
Navy or grey suits are always a go to for an interview. This is because they’re sophisticated, bold and not too eccentric – they tick all of the boxes and don’t overstep the mark. These can be textured nicely with a white shirt, while a block coloured tie is always the best way of completing this look without too much extra effort.
Don’t try and overdo it with the accessories; a watch is ok, but other features such as cufflinks and pocket squares may begin to look flamboyant in the context of an interview. As well as this, try and avoid wearing earrings, bracelets or neck chains – these add an extra dimension to your outfit that begins to look unprofessional in certain circumstances.
Complete this look properly with a pair of brogues or smart leather shoes. As a rule of thumb, always remember that you shouldn’t wear brown shoes with a black suit.

Celebrating a christening

Christenings are a great celebration that include all of your family and friends, so it’s important that you look the part on this special day. As there’s no specific dress code, it’s important that you make your own decisions but stick to a formal style of attire.
As a suggestion, avoid bright colours, as you want to remain respectful throughout the ceremony. Rather, go for a light coloured suit such as grey, which is slim fit, and couple this with an open white shirt or a tie if you want to add an extra layer of formality to your outfit.

What you should wear at a wedding

Weddings are always two things to men - a chance to have a great party, while being the most important day in a man’s life too. It’s fairly easy to look good at a wedding, but make sure that you don’t outdo the groom. Tie clips, pocket squares and cufflinks are all appropriate for the big day, so make sure you’re ready to wear all of these items with style and confidence.
If you’re one of the groomsmen, then you’ll be told what to wear by the groom, so this takes the pressure off you. It’s your friend’s day, so make sure you’re open to suggestions, but if you don’t like it, try not to cause any type of fuss.
If you’re the groom, then it’s all up to you, but make sure that you wear something that’s going to compliment your newly wedded wife’s dress. You don’t want to take the attention away from her, so make sure that your suit is a compliment and not an overstatement.
You’ve got many options to choose from; for example, your suit could be single or double breasted; or, you could wear a tuxedo if you’re looking for that added flare and edge. If this is the case, then make sure you have the venue to match - luxurious hotels and extravagant ballrooms are usually the best place to wear a tuxedo, otherwise, a slim-fitting suit jacket is going to be more appropriate in a more low-key environment.
In regards to how you’ll compare to your groomsmen, make sure your colour scheme is the same, but you’ll need one part of the outfit that’s going to be different and stands out. For example, this could be in the form of a tie or a waistcoat; patent leather shoes are a greater staple if you’re wearing a tuxedo too, as it provides the look with opulent footwear to match.

Funerals: in case of the unfortunate

As much as the major events in a man’s life can be pleasant, they can also be difficult. There’s a good chance that you’ll need to attend more than one funeral in your lifetime, and it’s important that you’re dressed respectfully in order to respect the occasion. Black suits are a classic example of how to dress simply and without any fuss. This consists of a black suit jacket, a crisp white shirt, a black tie and black trousers with black shoes.

Black Tie Dinner: dining in true style

Emulating the true decadence of Truman Capote’s black tie event held in 1966 at The Plaza Hotel, a black tie event offers all the glamour of a black and white Hollywood film. A full tuxedo and a tie is required for this event. For a tuxedo, you should generally wear one with a shawled lapel as these offer the fully accentuated allure within your outfit. Always remember that you need a cummerbund to complete this outfit, which sits around your waist and just above your trousers.

Dressing for a day at the races

If you’re going to the races, then you could wear a suit. However, if you want to keep it more casual and comfortable, then you could wear a blazer with a shirt and a pair of fitted jeans with some smart shoes. A skinny fit tartan suit is a great way of standing out from the crowd, as during popular events, people tend to wear very similar outfits.

Just remember that events and what you should wear at them will always be varied, however, your style should always be personal in terms of what you bring to the table when wearing a classic stapled outfit. Keep in mind that confidence is key; if you’re not confident in what you’re wearing then you’re never going to pull it off, so make sure that you’re comfortable at all times so that you really make a fashionable difference where it counts.
